PTSD

PTSD Treatment for Women in Colorado

PTSD is more common in women than in men, yet it frequently goes unrecognized or is misdiagnosed as depression or anxiety alone. When trauma history isn't explored carefully and when hormonal factors that influence stress response aren't considered treatment often addresses only part of the picture. At Colorado Direct Psychiatric Care, PTSD is evaluated with the depth and care it deserves.

How PTSD Presents in Women

PTSD in women doesn't always look like flashbacks from a single dramatic event. It may present as:

  • Persistent hypervigilance and difficulty feeling safe
  • Intrusive memories, nightmares, or emotional flashbacks
  • Emotional numbness or feeling detached from your own life
  • Chronic sleep disruption
  • Difficulty trusting others or maintaining relationships
  • Symptoms that fluctuate with hormonal changes

Trauma, Hormones, and Mental Health

The stress response system and the hormonal system are deeply intertwined. Trauma affects how the body regulates cortisol, estrogen, and other hormones — and hormonal shifts can in turn intensify trauma-related symptoms. Many women with PTSD notice their symptoms worsen premenstrually or during perimenopause. These patterns matter and are evaluated as part of care here.

What Treatment Looks Like

Care begins with a comprehensive 90-minute evaluation covering your trauma history, current symptoms, hormonal patterns, sleep, and prior treatment experience. Treatment may include:

  • Psychiatric medication management for PTSD symptoms
  • Hormone evaluation when clinically relevant
  • Ongoing, longitudinal care that evolves as your needs change

All care is delivered via telehealth, accessible from anywhere in Colorado. This practice is not a crisis or intensive outpatient service — it is best suited for individuals seeking ongoing, structured psychiatric care.
